One of the worst things that can happen to you while you travel is your flight/bus/train is overbooked. The reason companies do that is someone always doesn't show up, so to make more money they sell more tickets than they actually can this very common everywhere even in the internet business, so if your travelling by a budget company you may not be compensated which sucks, a tip to avoid this is to check in as early as possible (note online check in is a good idea) Though luckily not all budget companies overbook (ie Ryanair) usually what will happen is most companies that overbook will have multiple trips leaving on the same day to that destination that you were supposed to be going, and if there is only one trip that day most likely it is a less popular route and there isn't a very big chance you will get bumped. So basically you should not fear this too much but still try to come early and if you voluntarily give up your seat a lot of companies will give you compensation (money)
